Kim and Ben McLennan

We took our son Ben to Elephant Home & Nature in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, and it was honestly the most beautiful, unforgettable experience we have ever had on a holiday.

Ben is autistic, level 3, and before we arrived, we were nervous as hell. As any additional-needs parent knows, you never quite know how a new experience will go. But from the moment we got there, Ben’s autism was not a problem at all. He was welcomed, understood, included, and treated with such kindness and respect.

Then he jumped up on Duk Dik like he was born to be there — and that smile, I will never, ever forget. It was like he had an instant connection. For the first time, my boy was just Ben — Ben the elephant mahout — full of confidence, joy, and a smile that could have lit up the night sky.

He was swimming with the elephants, jumping off their trunks, laughing, relaxed, confident, and completely in his element. I have never, ever seen him so relaxed and happy.
Tong and her amazing staff went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. A special mention to Tom, who was unbelievably kind, patient, and an absolute godsend. Tom has experience with additional-needs children, and I was amazed by his natural ability to connect with Ben and make him feel safe, capable, and happy.

We have had many different experiences on different holidays, but this one by far was nothing short of magical. It was not just an activity for us — it was healing, joyful, and deeply special.

I would highly recommend any additional-needs parent to give it a go. We were nervous as hell, but this became the best holiday experience we have ever had.

That smile on Ben’s face is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
